I got really lucky with my first licensing deal. I was approached by the gallery that was dealing with a hotel designer. I'd been loathe to even investigate reproducing my work because it's point is largely it's uniqueness and originality, but this opportunity was so well presented. Also, I knew the company that would be doing the reproductions and both they and the gallery had a very impressive list of previous clients. Also, the scope of the project in communications and contract was extremely well-defined and limited. I figured if I was ever going to try reproductions, this would be the way to go.

After one rather serious miscommunication about a legal question about what I do, during which I had to get quite forceful, all turned out amazingly. But one has to be confident in one's value and the value of one's work and principles. Otherwise it is exceedingly easy to get taken advantage of by middlemen.

Great post with great words of warning and encouragement!

Peace,

Ann,

This is a great post! I read this out loud to my husband and he thoroughly enjoyed it as a business owner. The lessons you have learned and share apply to many types of businesses. Thanks Ann!
